Feminist artist, Heather Mendel specializes in designing ketubot and inspirational calligraphic artworks. Her unique 'word-paintings' are of a spiritual nature and include vows appropriate for interfaith weddings and commitment ceremonies. Designing texts with a variety of English and Hebrew scripts, she will create a Word of Art specifically for you — or for that special couple in your life.

Texts can be traditional or egalitarian and Heather offers some texts of her own. The borders and backgrounds are painted and illuminated to reflect the colors, passions and unique personalities of each individual couple. Signed during the wedding ceremony and witnessed by the rabbi and those chosen by the bridal couple, a ketuba, painted and illuminated, becomes a Word of Art. Its inspirational beauty delights not only the eye, but touches the spirit and reminds us of the highest aspirations in sacred relationship to which spiritual partners commit themselves. Many people celebrate significant anniversaries by commissioning a Word of Art ketuba as they rededicated themselves one to the other through the years. In addition to creating ketubot, Heather offers a wide range of other 'word paintings' of a spiritual nature, both as original commissions and as digital reproductions.

Heather's work is available in three different formats to meet different budgets.

  • 'Giclee' prints, digitally personalized, on archival watercolor paper are reproductions of some of her original designs, printed in the highest quality digital reproduction available today.
  • Hand-finished 'giclee' prints, digitally personalized and hand-illuminated to give the same lustrous and fiery gilding that has made her original works so appealing.
  • Original, hand-lettered, watercolor or pastel painted and illuminated word paintings.

Heather is also creating a series of stained glass frames to complement the beauty of her artwork.
